Representing Palestine Polytechnic University, Dr. Wael Shaheen participated in an international symposium held in Jericho from February 13 to 14, 2023. During the symposium, the Italian government signed development agreements worth 16.6 million euros with Palestine. Among these agreements was a 2.4-million-euro funding commitment for the conservation and management of Tell es-Sultan, which will be implemented over a period of three years.
The aim of this project is to foster sustainable tourism development, safeguard cultural and historical heritage, and undertake the study and preservation of archaeological sites. As part of this initiative, efforts will be made to preserve the ancient archaeological site of "Tell es-Sultan" in Jericho, which dates back over ten thousand years and covers an area of six hectares (equivalent to sixty thousand square meters). It's noteworthy that this site has been included in Palestine's provisional list of natural and cultural heritage sites and is now being considered for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The international symposium spanned two consecutive days and had participants from all over the world. It's worth noting that PPU actively encourages its academic staff to engage and collaborate with local and international institutions to improve the educational experience in Palestine.
