On September, 5, 2016, the PPU received the first place at the International Competition of the (ACM) for programming at the level of Palestine in the activities of the International competition in Palestine ACM PCPC 2016 arranged for the university students. The students’ winning team have included both Mohammad Fataftah, Eiman Sharabai and Maysaa al-Zarou in addition to Dr. Mousa Irfa’ieh, the International Competition Coordinator in Palestine.
It is noteworthy that the winning team of the College of Information Technology and Computer Engineering at PPU will take part in the Arab competition which will be held next November in Egypt or in Lebanon as determined by the organizing committee of competition.
The coordinator of the International competition in Palestine, Dr. Mousa Irfa’ieh, pointed out that the competition aimed to develop the students’ programming skills and abilities and provide the educational field with information regarding the students’ programming abilities, skills and interests to get benefit of them on the ground. In addition, this competition was arranged to help the students to develop their skills and learn about how to manage teams in regard to programming, thinking and planning in order to be able to solve problems as a team and open global prospects in front of them.
Also, Dr. Radwan Tahboub, the Dean of the CITCE stressed the importance of giving total support for such activities that may reflect positively on the students’ personality during their study and after their graduation from the university. Also he pointed out that the university has won this completion for the third year successively, and this will have a great effect on the information technology sector in Palestine at the local, regional and global levels.
The President of the university, Prof. Imad al-Khatib, also stressed the role of the university in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship and he urged students to participate in such activities at the regional and global level which will in turn develop the students’ abilities and create a spirit of competition among them in the various specialized areas.
It is noteworthy also that the ACM is one of the most important competitions in programming at the global level. It was founded in 1970 and is held annually under the supervision of the ACM, and the support of the major technology companies. This competition targets university students who compete in teams representing their universities; each consists of three students. The competition takes into account the students’ scientific level, ability to analyze, design and use algorithm to find the solution by using one of the programming languages: C , C++ and Java and their ability to invest the time, distribute the tasks , have cooperation among the team members and team work.
In this year competition, there were 29 participants from 9 Palestinian universities: Palestine Polytechnic University (PPU), an-Najah National University, BirZeit University, Hebron University, Palestine Technical University, the Arab American University of Jenin, Bethlehem University, Al-Quds Open University and al-Quds University. The team BZU Monsters from BirZeit University won the second place and CCoders team from BirZeit University also won the third place, the team Avengers from the Arab American University of Jenin got the fourth place and the fifth place was gone to the team strike from an-Najah National University.
It should be also noted here that the organizing committee of the competition consists of Mr. Mohammad Fuad, the Executive Director of the programming competition in the Arab region, Mr. Ahmad al-Sayyed and Mr. Basel Al-Tamimi, members of the technical committee for preparing the completion process system, Mr. Ahmad Sammouh, from Booking Company in Netherland as a member of the jury, Dr. Adnan Suleiman, from An-Najah University, Nicole Hush, from the International Competition Committee, and Anas Amro, from Palestine Polytechnic University (PPU) and the Competition Press Committee.
